We know that non-punitive programs led by formerly incarcerated people reduce harmful beliefs about masculinity & violence, build meaningful connections & lead to safer communities.
And we proved it.

Success Stories partnered with researchers from Marginalia Research Group for several years to commission a new independent study, finding that our peer-led approach is reshaping how incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men think about violence, masculinity, and accountability, and strengthening their relationships with family and community in the process.
The evaluation is the first large-scale, independent assessment of SSP, which began inside a California prison in 2014 and now operates in 11 state facilities, as well as in reentry programs, schools, and community-based settings.
Our key findings:
01
SSP fosters transformative learning, leading participants to reevaluate their views on masculinity & relationships.
02
SSP encourages resistance to the social pressure placed on men to limit their emotional expression & vulnerability.
03
The program encourages participants to foster authentic relationships & community connections.
04
SSP empowers participants to identify & prioritize personal goals.
05
Completion of the program is associated with a positive change in self-conception, characterized by increased integrity, pride, & agency.
06
SSP fosters a culture of accountability & honesty, promoting constructive communication & mutual respect among participants.
07
SSP facilitators are praised by participants for their relatability, effectiveness, & ability to create a supportive learning environment.

"Success Stories is about transforming the conditions that make harm possible.
We have seen this in action for years: when people inside are treated as human beings capable of growth, they build safer, healthier communities."
Chris Johnson, Executive Director of Success Stories Program

Founded by incarcerated men, Success Stories Program was built on the belief that personal transformation is possible when people have space to examine the patriarchal beliefs that cause harm to themselves, their families, and their communities. Our program’s curriculum invites participants to interrogate those beliefs, define the people and goals most important to them, and rebuild relationships grounded in love, integrity, and accountability.
Today, Success Stories alumni continue to be thought leaders driving conversations and policies that foster healthier relationships, stronger communities, and lasting change. We lead peer-to-peer workshops, mentor others, and bring the program’s transformative approach to group homes, schools, reentry programs, and workplaces across California.
